Cobbler Pool is a campsite located on the Avon River west of the town of Toodyay.

It is accessed via Julimar Road, River Road and Cobbler Pool Road when coming from Toodyay and via Toodyay Road, Lovers Lane and Cobbler Pool road if coming from the western side.

There are three different places to camp along the river but the one to the right as you cross the railway tracks will be unavailable during the Avon Descent as it is used as an overnight stop for the competitors.

2023 will mark the 50th running of the Avon Descent so it is quite a milestone.

The best time to visit is during mid-spring to early summer as the river will probably be flowing and the area is generally green and attractive.

As you enter the campsite you have to cross an active rail line at an uncontrolled crossing. This means there are no boom gates and no lights to warn you of an approaching train.

Make sure you check in both directions before crossing. As you will see from our video, trains move at high speed along this section of line so you must be careful.

Once you cross the rail line you can follow the track straight on to a slope leading down to an area right next to the river. This area can be flooded after heavy rain so if you camp there, be aware that the river can rise and flood the lower level.

In drier times this area is popular because it is both close to the river and a little more protected from the noise of passing trains.

To get to the second area, turn left directly after crossing the railway line and follow the track to a large open area.

There are plenty of flat open spaces here and the area is raised up away from the river so it is better to camp here in wet weather.

If you continue to follow the track along the river the track becomes narrow, rough and unsiutable for anything but four wheel drive vehicles.

Turning right after the railway crossing will lead you to the third area. This is the one used during the Avon Descent but will be available at most other times. Please note that pets are not permitted during the Avon Descent weekend but are ok to bring at other times.

This area is smaller than area 2 but is flat and attractive and there is some shade available.

It is also raised up away from the river and is a safer option during wet weather.

Noise from passing trains may be an issue as the trains are frequent and can be very loud.

It is not advisable to swim in the river when it is flowing strongly and swimming at any time should be done with caution due to the presence of underwater obstacles.
